Jerry Wong

Mobile engineer at Betterment

Jerry was first involved with the Android space back in 2016, when he was compelled to be the very best and started working on his Pokemon GO bot. Previously a junior Android developer, he now enjoys most of his time working with Flutter as a mobile engineer at Betterment. When he isn’t writing code, he serves as an AAPI advocate and officer at one of Betterment’s ERSGs: Asians of Betterment.

How to pretend to know Flutter

Fake it till you make it! Let me, a junior Android developer, teach you how to pretend to know Flutter. Together, we'll follow my onboarding in my new role as a Flutter developer with no prior experience. In each stage, we’ll be highlighting specific Flutter concepts and how they compare to Android so even you can become a Flutter developer in no time.

We will review the three concepts that you will need to learn to demonstrate a working understanding of Flutter- the dart syntax and workflow, user interfaces, and state management. After the presentation is over, we will 1) have an overview of Flutter’s learning curve and enough context to start exploring Flutter; 2) reflect from the perspective of a junior android developer so that we can better improve the way we hire, onboard, and mentor our juniors; and 3) have a good laugh.
